What is recorded here

On N side of road close to foot of a hillslope. Known locally as Poll na bPéist (pers. comm. T. Robinson), it consists of an unenclosed rectangular area (L 28m, Wth 23m) occupied by a dense concentration of small set stones, indicating graves oriented E-W. Head- and foot-stones are visible in places. It is said that Famine victims were buried here as well as children (ibid). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
