House — 17th century in Unknown Townland

The buildings at Nos 218, 219 and 220, Parnell Street, consisted of single bay three-storey structures with evidence for basements in Nos 218 and 219. Inspected in 2001 (SMR file) they were identified as containing fabric of late 17th century date. Nos 218 and 219 were demolished following a major fire in the premises in 2004 and further inspection of the remains confirmed that while a small number of damaged early features survived in No. 220 there was evidence to suggest a significant total re-build in the 19th century. No.220 is a single-bay building that survives at ground, first and second floor levels. It is possible also, that the building had a cellar. The structure appears to have originally comprised a stairhall, with rooms to front and back separated by a corner chimney breast which survives to second floor level: the staircase and some internal partitions no longer exist. Parts of the timber flooring survive at both first and second floor levels. These are in poor condition and have collapsed in places. Panels of internal lath and plaster are visible both in situ and in collapsed areas. A timber-framed partition with lath and plaster survives at first floor level. The façade to Parnell Street is of red Flemish bond brickwork to the top of the first floor window arch. Above this level the façade has been rebuilt, probably in the nineteenth century, in mottled yellow/red English garden wall bond brickwork. There are the remains of a timber shopfront at ground floor level. The first floor wall, above the shopfront, of the Parnell St façade, and the chimney breast are consistent with a construction date in the later 17th century (report in SMR file). No.220 Parnell Street was recorded by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (Ref. 50060493) and given a rating of ‘Regional’ significance based on its special architectural interest.
