Grattan Bridge (1873-5) occupied the site of Essex Bridge (1733-5) and an earlier bridge (1753-5) built in 1676 (O'Keefe & Simington T.1991, 104, 232-235). This bridge over the Liffey river had seven arches and a drawbridge. The three-centred, intrado curves of the arches of this bridge are considered to be the earliest examples of this type in Ireland (op cit , 232 ).
