Excavations in 1974 revealed a wooden wharf from which issued a series ofwooden drains built of re-used ships timbers and flanked by post and wattle fences. A wooden revetment was uncovered in a slipway approaching the Liffey and dated to the 13th--century. Associated with this revetment was a cobbled pathway resting on a wattle screen. Finds included local and imported wares, quarnstones and clinker-built ships-timbers (Wallace 1974, 15, Halpin 2000, 35-6, 37-42)). There are historical references to a stone quay wall from c. 1260 (Halpin, 2000, 181), in 1396 it was unsuitable for large ships, and up to the 17th century (Clarke 20002, 27).
