Excavations at No. 35 Parliament Street in 1991 uncovered the remains of a clay bank which would have protected the landward (W) side of the early town from being in undated by the River Poddle which flowed N from Dublin Castle down the present line of Parliament Street and emptied into the River Liffey. This was associated with rich deposits dated to the 11th-12th century (Scally 1992, 14; Scally 1994, 24-5; Scally 2002, 11-33).
