In the 18th centuryhuman remains accompanied by weapons including swords and spears were discovered during the excavation of foundations for North Great George's Street, Summerhill, Gardiners Row and Mountjoy Square (Ledwich 1763). These were enclosed by a deep trench which was rectangular in form. Ledwich postulated that these burials were associated with the Battle of Clontarf in 1012 A. D. .
