There is a 'Bowling Green' marked on Rocque's map 1756 which attests to the upmarket and settled nature of this then recently developed area north of St Stephens Green. It lay to the rear of Sir Joshua Dawson's house built in 1710. The bowling green catered for a leisured class, with opportunities for promenading and disporting(Lennon & Montague 2010, 41).
