Harbour — Knocknagin

Harbour built c. 1760 (Cronin 2010, 34) depicted on the 1837 ed. Osi 6-inch map located 90m to the NE of Lowther Lodge.  An entry in 'The Farm Diary of Lowther Lodge Balbriggan 1803-1822' dated November the 5th in 1806 recorded that a 'very large stone brought by Mr. Lowthere many years ago from the mound at Newhaven and was lying on the strand was brought by two horses in the machine and put as a coin (sic) to the left hand corner of the stairs going down to the quay' (Balcombe 2008, 47). A second entry in the diary dated October 17th, 1818 recorded that; 'A boat load of large fillers was brought from Newhaven' (ibid., 91).  This suggests the possibility that kerbstones from the passage tomb (DU002-001002-) at Bremore were used in the construction of the pier. A 2010 report on the coastal architectural heritage of Fingal commissioned by Fingal Co. Co. recorded that; 'the remains of a second rubble pier, which is not listed in the RMP, are located on the stretch of the Knocknagin shoreline to the north of Bremore headland. This pier was associated with the Lowther family who may have arrived from Cumbria in the 17th century' (Cronin 2010, 10).    Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien based on details provided by Ian Lennon.
