Mill — unclassified in Milestown

The precise location of a medieval mill within the townland of Milestown has not been identified.  In 1504 Walter Fitzsimon, archbishop of Dublin (1484-1511), confirmed  to Holy Trinity church (Christchurch) (DU018-020270-) ‘a messuage in Myleston [Milestown] where an old mill was formerly’ (McNeill 1950, 255-8; VRTI CCD/350-399/379).   The townland of Milestown in the parish of Balscaddan, barony of Balrothery East stands on the county boundary with Meath.  The Delvin River forms the W boundary of the townland which forms the county boundary with Meath and the townland boundary with Stadalt in County Meath. A mill pond, mill-race and flour mill (ITM Coords 714764/765422) are shown in the townland of Stadalt on the 1837 ed. OSi six-inch map. The mill race for this Flour Mill runs parallel to the section of the River Delvin which forms the W boundary of Milestown.  The mill race lies 70m to the W of the townland boundary of Milestown and the Flour Mill stands 50m N of the townland boundary with Milestown. It is possible that this mill race and flour mill stands on the site of the medieval mill of Milestown.     Compiled by: Caimin O’Brien
