Architectural fragment in Kilconnell 0r Glebe

The Church of Ireland parish church at Kilmacrenan was built in 1840-6 (Rowan 1979, 335). Set into the exterior face of the walls are five dressed fragments. In the N wall of the vestry are the remains of two hood-mould stops (DG045-008004-), the tapering ends of which are broken away; each has a single vine-leaf enrichment. These stops were probably removed from the nearby Franciscan friary (DG045-010001-). Below the E window is a small sandstone panel, 25cms square, symetrically divided by four diagonal criss-crossing stalks with stylised leaf-terminals filling the intervening spaces; all in false relief. Centrally set above the windows in the E wall of the porch and just below the eaves is an eight-fluted piscina-like carved stone (DG045-008002-) with central hole. There is a similar four-fluted example in the corresponding position in the E wall of the vestry. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.
