Red Castle (site of): In 1601, this castle was inhabited by Hugh Carrogh McLaughlin and was captured by English forces in the 1608 rebellion. Granted to Chichester, it was let to Sir Richard Hansard and subsequently to Sir George Carey. The castle was probably a ruin by 1665 and had been entirely demolished more than a century and a half ago. It was sited on a boss of rock, c. 4.5m high. (Simmington 1937, 2; Davies and Swan 1939, 207; Hunter 1975, 82).
