Field system in Tullydush Lower

Situated on SW facing slope of Bawnloge Hill in rough mountainous pasture with good views of valley below from E through S to W and higher land to N and NE. A large complex of grass-covered field walls [Wall T 0.6m; H 0.3m) runnning from E-W and N-S across the SW facing slope of Bawnloge Hill forming several fields with the remains of hut sites (DG029-056/057001/057002-) and houses (DG029-053/054) inside some of these small fields. Some of these grass covered field walls appear to be indicated on the 1838 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and appear to be contemporaneous with the hut sites and house sites which they enclose. The dating of this field system is problematical and further research including archaeological excavation may be required in order to ascertain a dating for this field system and its associated buildings. The spatial relationship between the field walls and the house sites and hut sites would tend to suggest that these monuments represent a series of farmbuildings within a series of small irregular shaped fields. The presence of a panel of rock art (DG029-051) within this field system may suggest that these monuments are prehistoric in date. Alternatviely the rectangular shaped houses may be late-medieval or 17th century in date and may represent a clustered settlement with associated field system of medieval or post medieval date.
