Lisnafealey Stone Ringfort — Gortnatraw South

Internal diam. c. 30m. Known as Lisnafealey, the site consists of a roughly circular area enclosed by a very ruined wall, the perimeter of which cannot be traced with certainty. A spread of stone c. 4m wide has been built up 1.6m high, sloping toward the interior on the W side on the line of the cashel wall. There is also a modern facing of stones on the N exterior. There is a modern 5m wide gap on the SW side. A 3m wide gap to the N seems to be modern also. The interior is much disturbed and has been used as a dumping ground. It is said that there was a spring on the NW side but it has been filled in. Also in the NW corner is a series of lines of stones which seem to be the remains of a 'wall chamber roofed with horizontal flags' noted by Kinahan (1889, 278). The site is located on a S-facing slope overlooking Mulroy Bay. There is fair pasture in the area. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.
