The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Rectangular building (10.7m N-S, 6.9m E-W) of three storeys, with stair tower at SW. Constructed of rubble with split stone laid in mortar with ashlar quoins. Entrance on N side of projecting stair tower protected by machicolation on third floor of tower, which originally carried wooden stairs. Bartizan at NE corner of main tower. Wooden floors carried on corbels. Oven and kitchen fireplace in north gable wall. Fireplaces in N and S walls of 1st and 2nd floor. Attic floor entered from stair tower, giving access also to crenellated parapet on E and W walls. Probably built in 1630's by James Butler (JRSAI 1892, 444).
