The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Castle in vicinity of Ballyellin Church recorded on Down Survey (1655-6) map. May have stood immediately S of churchyard, where ground is level and sheltered although ill-drained. Low earthworks not marked on the 'OS 6-inch' maps are visible, apparently of field system predating present pre-1839 system (earthworks (CW019-081----)). Castle unlikely to have stood immediately N of graveyard where ringfort exists (no. 358). The exact location of the castle is unknown.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
