Kiln — corn-drying in Kilcarrig

Initially identified (in Area B) during archaeological test trenching in advance of a quarry development in 2003 (Excavation Licence No. 03E1336) (Ó Drisceoil 2006, 24-5). Full excavation took place in 2007 (Excavation Licence No. 07E0962) and revealed two adjoining pits. The larger pit (L 3.2m; Wth 1.6m; D 0.8m) was concave in shape and had a concave base, while the smaller pit (L 1.25m; Wth 1.46m; D 0.23m) was sub-oval in shape with concave sides and a flat base. Charcoal, burnt cattle and pig bones, grains of hulled barley and numerous species of wild plant seeds were found in the fill of the pits. Burnt bone recovered from the larger pit produced a radiocarbon date of cal 18 BC to cal 118 AD. Found in close proximity to a series of pits, hearths, post-holes and stakeholes (CW016-120003-), a possible fulacht fia (CW016-120006-) and two-stone lined features (CW016-120005-).
