The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

According to Topographica Hibernica (1795), 'at Fenagh Church are the ruins of an old castle, which appears to have been well fortified by ramparts and a double ditch, formerly the seat of one of the Kings of Leinster'. O'Donovan (OSL 1839, 71), citing the above, adds 'corn now waves over the ground formerly occupied by this ancient edifice. Vestiges of the ditch or fosse, however, remain'. The exact location of the castle is unknown.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
