What is recorded here

The OS 25-inch Name Book of 1908 refers to a small mound here. According to the OS Memoirs for County Cavan there was a 'giant's grave' of the 'common oblong form' measuring 40 links (c. 8m) long and 12 links (c. 2.5m) in maximum width at this place in the 1850s. There is no trace of it now. This may have been a megalithic tomb. (de Valera and Ó Nualláin 1972, 138, No. 8; OS Memoir, Laragh parish, County Cavan) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
