A castle was apparently erected by John Taylor at Ballyhaise c. 1610, on the instruction of the Lord Deputy. Although there are now no visible remains of this structure, Davies (1948a, 111-12) described it as a 'timber house' probably built on the site of the present Ballyhaise House, which itself was partly constructed in 1705. It is situated on a gentle slope commanding a view of the Annalee River and a ford upon which a bridge was built in the early 18th century.
