The road from Rerrin to the W end of Bere Island generally follows the route of the Bealach Mór, a road believed to have been constructed by Sir George Carew's army to facilitate its movement across Bere Island in 1602. There are two sections of the Bealach Mór which occur in the N portion of Ballynakilla townland and from which the present road is diverted. The first section (NGR 71000,43956) comprises a stretch of old road (L c. 800m NW-SE; Wth 2.5-3m) which is located on the N-facing slopes of Knockanullig and, further to the SE, a second stretch (L c. 70m; Wth c. 3-4m; NGR 72512,43618) on lower ground. According to O'Sullivan (1992, 56), the old road 'contains large step-like features on the steeper inclines, often cut out of the rock.'
