In pasture, on a NW-facing slope. A large spread of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline in 2000. The spread appears to have been dragged over the area by ploughing. A test-trench (Wth 1.2m; L 25m E-W) which was excavated across the spread showed it to be barely 0.05m in depth. The spread was limited to two patches along the length of the trench. A subcircular area (diam. 1.81m; D 0.4m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was also noted to the W of the test-trench. The excavator concluded, based on local information, that the main concentration of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil lies to the N of the pipeline corridor, outside the excavated area.
