Burnt mound in Castlelands (carbery East (w.d.) By.)

This possible burnt mound was identified during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline and was archaeologically tested in 2000 (pers. comm. Red Tobin). It consisted of a narrow band of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil which projected into the wayleave of the pipeline from the N baulk. It extended from the baulk for 1.5m and the deposit of material was 0.4m in depth and resting on sterile soil. The area did not yield any features cut into the subsoil. It would appear that the major part of this spread lies in the field to the N of the wayleave. The material tested may have been dragged onto this area during ploughing. Another possible burnt mound (CO109-090002-) c. 110m to the W was excavated in advance of the pipeline construction.
