Souterrain in Cloonygorman

In pasture, on the SE-facing slope of a knoll on the edge of a deep wooded ravine with views across the valley to Mullaghmesha. This earth-cut souterrain was discovered when the ground collapsed during silage cutting. It was described by Myler (1998, 101) and the following is based on that description. The collapse allowed access to a NW-SE passage. On the W side of the passage was an earth-cut chamber (8ft [2.4m] x 6ft [1.8m]; H 4ft [1.2m]). Beyond this point the passage forked, the W fork ending within a couple of feet. The E fork continued, via a low earthen step, into another passage extending to the N but eventually blocked with earth. Close to the earthen step was a blocked-up construction shaft. By 2005 the collapsed opening had been covered over for safety reasons. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
