According to Went (1946, 148), in 1769 Thomas, fourth Viscount Kenmare mentioned in his estate books that on his property at Donemark, a short distance north of Bantry town, there were 'large palaces or receptacles for carrying on a fishery on it which the tenant's father carried on while the pilchard remained on the coast.' The location of this fish palace at Dunnamark is unknown. This would appear to date to the post-1700 AD period.
