On coastal promontory fort (CO100-01702-) projecting S into sea. Only remains of castle are grass-covered mound at inner end of entrance causeway. Westropp (1914, 103) noted peel-tower or gatehouse (L 30 feet; W17 feet) 'with wall 6 feet thick of good slab masonry'. He records one fragment of wall 'ending in window-jambs 6 feet long and 10 feet high'. According to Healy (1988, 132) built in 1595 by order of Queen Elizabeth but destroyed soon after by the Earl of Desmond when 'the garrison was either put to the sword or thrown over the cliff'.
