What is recorded here

In Cloyne. The appearance of this urban tower house is only known from an 18th-century illustration (Harbison 2000, 46-7) which shows a tower of at least three storeys standing to full height on a street corner. The illustration shows part of the battlements surviving, a single round-headed window light, and a prominent base batter. On the street front on one side is shown a doorway, a glazed window and an oriel window. These latter are all inserted features, probably early 18th century in date. A north sign on the illustration suggests that the tower house stood on the corner of Rock St. and Church St. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
