Cloyne House — Demesne (imokilly By.)

At E edge of Cloyne, on S side of Rock Street; adjacent to Cathedral graveyard on W side. Present house restored servant's wing of early 18th century house; 4-bay, 2-storey block with extension to N and square block to SW; all with hipped roofs and of 19th century appearance. Site of Bishop's palace of Cloyne. Plaque with initials IEG (John FitzEdmundFitzGerald) and date 1578, set into wall of square block, probably commemorates house built here by FitzGerald when he took possession of See demesne (Fleming 1903b). A new house was built here by Bishop Crowe in 1718, this was known as "The Manse House"; in 1836 the house was leased as a private residence, when apparently 'the old part of the palace' was taken down (Lewis 1837, vol. 1, 381). According to local information the house was destroyed by fire in 1887, only surviving portion short section of wall on N side of present house. Hexagonal gate lodge, of late 18th century appearance, by street entrance to N. At NW corner of grounds shell of fortified house (CO088-01909-).
