What is recorded here

Roadside, atop hill; rectangular graveyard (c. 60m E-W; c. 35m N-S) enclosed by high stone wall. Just N of centre, fragmentary ruin of Knockavilly parish church (9504). In occasional use; numerous 18th- and 19th-century headstones, earliest noted dated 1795; also numerous low uninscribed gravemarkers. According to Hartnett (1939, 263), rounds were paid here at the grave of Rev. Patrick Murphy, who died in 1845. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
