What is recorded here

In pasture, on E-facing slope. Roughly circular area (32.5m NNE-SSW; 28.3m E-W) defined by earthen bank (H 2m) S->NE; scarp (H 2.7m) elsewhere, with slight internal lip (max. H 0.4m) to E. External fosse (D 1.2m) survives to N; infilled SSW->NNW but line cleary visible. Low rises to NNE and ENE suggest presence of second bank. Outside scarp to E and SE is 4m wide terrace above second scarp (H 1.4m). Earlier plan (UCC) shows outer bank surviving N->SE and terrace SE->S. Gap (Wth 1m) in bank to E. Remains of cultivation ridges cross interior on ESE-WNW axis. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
