On top of a area of rock outcrop, surrounded by tillage; no visible surface trace of castle shown as rectangular structure on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Gillman (1892b, 220) described the 'small portion of the castle' surviving in his day as 'probably of the fashion of Carrignamuck' (CO072-019----) (ibid.); he argues that it was built between 1465 and 1500 by the MacCarthys but occupied by their gallowglass, the MacSweenys.
