Church in Kilbarry (muskerry West By., Inchigeelagh Par.)

On terrace, in pasture, near summit of Kilbarry Hill. Rectangular structure, defined by sod-covered walls (15m E-W; 6.5m N-S); interior leveland grass-covered, no trace of burial markers. W wall (Wth 2m; int. H0.6m; ext. H 1.4m) stone-faced on outside, as is inside of S wall; the latter is incorporated into roadside fence. In 1700 ruin described as'walls of a church or chappel, call'd Killbarry, the walls built with stone and clay are standing uncover'd. The bounds of the churchyard are discernible; 'tis said to have been a chappel of ease, built by the Learys' (Brady 1863, vol. 1, 120). No visible surface trace of churchyard or burial ground (CO082-012001-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
