What is recorded here

At foot of NW side of Kilbarry Hill, on shelf of rough grazing. No visible surface trace of castle built by O Leary clan (Healy 1988, 35); according to local tradition, stones from castle used in constructing nearby Kilbarry House in early 19th century. According to O Murchadha (1993, 239), documentary sources suggest castle here 'not built before the 1570s'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
