What is recorded here

On S shore of Gougane Barra, immediately adjacent to Holy Island (CO080-012001-).Small rectangular graveyard enclosed to E and S by stone wall and to N and W by stone-faced scarp. In W half are rows of low uninscribed gravemarkers, otherwise inscribed headstones all 20th-century in date and include Seamus Murphy's memorial for the Tailor and Ansty. Along roadside to NW is large vault, open to S, which marks burial place of Fr. D.O'Mahony, who founded nearby hermitage (CO080-012001-) (MacCarthy 1936, Mould 1962); inscribed with Latin epigraph which translates as "Dr Dyonisius O'Mahony, although an unworthy presbyter, built this monument to himself and his successors in the same vocation, An. dom. 1700" (pers. comm. Dr P.A.J. Cronin). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
