Church (in Ruins) — Kilcredan

In NE quadrant of Kilcredan graveyard (CO077-04301-), roofless ruin of gabled rectangular church (17m E-W; 5.3m N-S). Round-arched doorway W of centre in N wall, reduced in size by insertion of lintelled door; gabled porch outside. Second lintelled door at E end of N wall leads into gabled vestry. All window opes in church have pointed arches with brick surrounds and limestone sills. Central window ope in E and W gable, W window now blocked; three windows in S wall and one in N wall near NW corner. Traces of blocked window ope just E of central window in S wall and of larger blocked ope just to W. Monumental tomb to Sir Robert Tynte (CO077-065---) at E end of S wall and memorial to Sir Edward Harris (CO077-04303-) near E end of N wall; more recent altar tomb in SW corner; Bolton (1875-7) gives two inscriptions on tombs 'in the church' dated 1710 & 1812. On site of ancient parish church of Kilcredan which was in ruins by 1591 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 254); present church built 1636 by Sir Robert Tynte (Lee 1926, 86); Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 73) notes that church 'about to be rebuilt'; additions to N wall may date to this time. Still in use 1910 (Coleman 1913, 35) but abandoned shortly after 1924 when church stripped of its roof (Lee 1926, 86-7).
