According to Zajac et al. (1995, 79) 'The lands of Midleton were granted to the fitzGeralds of Cloyne in the 16th century who held them until the time of the Cromwellian confiscations. The town received a charter of incorporation in 1670 which granted the manor of Middleton to Sir John Broderick and gave the borough the right to send two members to the Irish parliament. Situated on an important routeway between Cork and Youghal, the town also had access to Cork Harbour via the port of Ballinacurra…'. The C of I church and graveyard on the W side of the Main St. occupy the site of the Cistercian abbey of Chore (vol. 2, 5776, 5907).
