Fulacht fia in Clashadunna East

Found in 2002 during topsoil stripping at the site of a proposed roundabout on the N25 Youghal Bypass. An oval trough (1.68m x 1.35m; D 0.4m) filled with a dark grey/black loam containing occasional inclusions of charcoal and frequent inclusions of angular, heat-shattered stone. Excavation revealed a post-hole at each corner of the trough, suggesting that it may have had a lining of wooden planks. The excavator noted the absence of any burnt mound in the excavated area and suggests that the trough may be an outlier for a potential fulacht fia outside of the road take or that it indicates that the trough was used only once and then backfilled (Russell 2002, 4). An E-W stone-built field drain (Wth 0.44m) of unknown date was found to the NE of the trough. (Russell 2004a, 67) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
