Inside W angle of town walls, contains medieval parish church of St Mary (CO067-02903-). Described by Hayman (1896, xii) as 'very extensive, occupying a considerable portion of the hill immediately over the town'. Hayman (ibid.) notes 'freestanding-stone' of Susan Russel dated 1672; otherwise headstones date from 1710 (O'Shea 1988, 69).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
