What is recorded here

In pasture; fragmentary remains of structure shown as complete rectangle on 1842 OS 6-inch map, incorporated into field fence system, in NE corner of "haggard" field. According to Healy (1988, 19), much of structure 'bulldozed some years ago'; part of N wall survives: mortared sandstone rubble construction (L c. 10.5m; H c. 1.4m) with base batter on N face. No trace of S or W walls but field fence to E (missing its outer facing and much overgrown) may incorporate part of E wall. Remains of a Mac Carthy castle (ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
