Church (in Ruins) — Coolineagh

In centre of graveyard (9523), within early ecclesiastical enclosure (9199). Fragmentary remains of two successive C of I parish churches of Aghabulloge. Only sod-covered remains of earlier church survive: 11.3m of S wall, standing to 1.1m internally but with no external height due to rise in ground level caused by burials; at E end similar profile to outline of D-shaped apse (4.2m N-S; 3.6m E-W). East gable (L 7.4m) and short return of S wall (2.3m) of later church stand 5.5m N of S wall of earlier church and 5m W of apse; it seems likely that S wall of later church built on line of N wall of earlier church. Gable has tall, pointed central window embrasure; a timber window frame, now in Carrignamuck castle (9469) is said to have been removed from here. Earlier church built about 1690 and 'thoroughly repaired' in 1828 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 2-3); however, described as 'a small dilapidated structure' in 1837 (Lewis 1837, vol. 1, 12); in 1838 later church erected; it was then that an ogham stone (7960) was discovered builtinto earlier church.
