What is recorded here

Depicted as hachured oval enclosure (c. 80m NE-SW; c. 60m NW-SE) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; more irregular in shape on 1904 and 1936 OS 6-inch map. Levelled during field fence clearance. Recorded by Power (17, 228) as 'ceall or killeen' who noted that 'a fence from 2 feet to 7 feet in height surrounds the once sacred place' and 'a boulder 6 feet by 3 feet bearing on its face a cup-shaped hollow (bullán) 9 inches in diameter by 8 inches deep' lay nearby but outside the fence. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
