Symbol for castle on Bateman map (1716-1717) atop hill, short distance N of Curraglass-Tallow road and 200m W of county boundary. Smith (1750, vol. 1, 152) states that 'Kilmacow' castle 'about a mile W of Tallow' was 'built by John Fitz-Gerald' ('the youngest son of Thomas, eight Earl of Desmond executed in 1467 at Drogheda' (Waters 1916,163)). Waters (ibid., 164) suggests that 'it may have collapsed between 1745 and 1749 for Smith writes of its ruins as 'standing' in his history of Waterford (1746) and as very lately fallen down in his history of Cork (1750). According to local information, site of castle in field to E of Springdale House. No visible surface trace.
