What is recorded here

In Ballynoe village; rectangular graveyard (c. 100m E-W; c. 50m N-S) enclosed by stone wall to W, elsewhere by stone-faced earthen bank. Ruins of Ballynoe parish church (CO046-03302-) in NE corner. Still in use; many 18th and 19th century headstones; some chest tombs and two mausoleums, one of which is large with collapsing hipped roof and plaque dated 1801. Three 18th-century headstones with Latin inscriptions, the earliest 1773, mark burials of Catholic priests (Murphy 1907-9, 241). Smith (1750, vol. 1, 153) and Lewis (1863, vol. 1, 160) mention remains of religious house here but the existence of such is doubtful (see CO046-033002-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
