On E side of road; rectangular (c. 55m E-W; c. 30m N-S) tree-lined graveyard enclosed by stone wall. Well-maintained graveyard with '186 headstones, about one-half of which were erected in the eighteenth century' (O Buachalla & Henchion 1966, 79-80) the oldest dated 1735; late 18th/19thcentury burial vault in NE corner. Ruined C of I parish church of Gortroe (CO044-04002-) in centre. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
