Discovered by Cork antiquarians in a souterrain (CO042-052002-) of a ringfort (CO042-052001-) and deposited in the museum of the Royal Cork Institution in 1835. It subsequently disappeared, probably when the Institution building was replaced by the Athenaeum in 1853 (White 1905-18, vol. 1, 322). A drawing of the stone (1.68m x 0.48m x 0.2m, converted from Macalister 1945) by John Windele shows a clear inscription which Macalister (1945, 61, no. 56) gave as SAGITTARI. The interpretation of this inscription was the subject of much debate in the 19th century (ibid.). The Greenhill ogham stones are c. 900m to NW (CO042-049001-, CO042-049002-).
