Roadside; rectangular graveyard (c. 90m SW-NE; c. 40m NW-SE); former C of Iparish church of Ballynamona (9571), just W of centre, built over ruins ofearlier parish church, during the demolition of which, Smith (1750, vol. 1, 173-4) mentions the discovery of 'a large spur, and the head of an antique spear', which he attributed to knight of nearby Mourne Abbey (9483). No longer in use; inscribed headstones date from mid-18th century; earlier this century described as 'thickly studded with headstones belonging to Roman Catholics' (Fitzgerald 1917-20, 163). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
