Kilcummer Ch — Kilcummer Lower

Within N perimeter of early ecclesiastical enclosure (13879), c. 30m NE of church (14427) and abutting W side of road. Outline of rectangular church (c. 40m E-W; c. 10m N-S) indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map and named 'Site of Kilcummer Church'; road (N-S) crosses structure off-centre to E. Indicated by symbol for antiquity and named 'Kilcummer Church (site of)' on 1905 OS 6-inch map. Named 'Kilcummer Church (in ruins)' on 1935 OS 6-inch map and indicated as L-shaped structure (long axis N-S, projection to W at S end). Described in OS Field Memorandum (1931) as 'fragment of an ancient wall, probably a portion of the church incorporated in the road fence close by'; accompanying sketch annotated '10 feet long, 12 feet high'. What now survives is low grass-covered L-shaped rise (L c. 12.8m WSW-ENE; projecting 7.1m to NNW at WSW end); NNW side and extent to ENE not visible due to overgrowth; possibly some remains of WSW end of structure, ENE end of which is shown along roadside on 1935 OS 6-inch map. Possibly remains of large parish church which was replaced by smaller church (14427) in graveyard to S in late-medieval period. A church at Kilcummer listed in Papal Taxation of 1291 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 257). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
