What is recorded here

On W side of road; towards SW side of early ecclesiastical enclosure (13879). Rectangular graveyard (c. 29m E-W; c. 22m N-S), enclosed by stone wall with vertical coping; entrance with stone piers and wrought iron gate on E side; remains of church (14427) forms NW corner of graveyard; site of second church (14428) c. 30m to NE. Graveyard in use; earliest headstone noted dated 1717. Southernmost strip of interior (L 6m N-S) drops gently to S boundary wall (D 1m); no burials in this lower area. Second sunken area (D 0.5m) in SE corner contains some burials. The 1842 OS 6-inch map shows graveyard extending short distance further to S; earthen bank (H 1.3m) parallel to and c. 6m S of S wall probably indicates this. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
