What is recorded here

In tillage, on N-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 55m) bisected by N-S field boundary on 1842 OS 6-inch map, with second bank hachured on W side and lime kiln shown to W between defences; only bivallate W half hachured on 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps. According to landowner, W half levelled c. 1950s. Roughly oval-shaped slightly raised area (c. 44m E-W; c. 30.5m N-S) defined by slight scarp; slight depression marks line of fosse to E and S; low rise to S on either side of N-S field fence may mark line of outer bank. Dark patch of soil (10m N-S; 8m E-W), extending from W scarp into interior, appears to be remains of lime kiln. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
