In pasture, on rock outcrop overlooking Blackwater River c. 250m to E. Tradition that MacCarthys attempted to build castle here but were attacked and defeated by O'Callaghans (Bowman 1934, 235). No visible surface trace of castle. Bones and swords said to have been found during construction of nearby road (ibid., 235). No castle shown in townland on Down Survey (1655-6) barony map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000).
