According to McCracken (1957, 128), there was a charcoal-burning ironworks at Clonmeen which was built about 1660 by Sir Richard Kyrle and had '...ceased by 1685.' The exact location of this metalworking site is unknown.

Located along the southeast edge of a grasland field. Glassy, dark green slag is visible on the surface. This is probably the site of the blast furnace worked by Richard Kyrle between 1660 and 1685. If the stream noted in the adjacent field to the west on the 1830's OS 6-inch map is the tail race, the furnace itself must located nearer to the western edge of the grasland field. 01-11-2010
